The family of the late Professor Thomas Mba Akabzaa visited the Presidency yesterday to officially announce his passing and discuss funeral arrangements.
The delegation was led by Hon. Albert Abongo, former Minister for Works and Housing and former MP for Bongo, accompanied by notable figures including Ing. William Amuna, former CEO of GRIDCo; Dr. Charles Abugre, former CEO of SADA; Hon. Charles Bawa Dua, current MP for Bongo; Hon. Edward Bawa, Managing Director of GOIL and former MP; Dr. Shafic Suleman, Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC); Hon. Esther Akabzaa, the late professor’s widow; and their children.
The delegation was warmly received by Chief of Staff Hon. Julius Debrah on behalf of the President. Among the dignitaries present were Hon. John Jinapor, Minister for Energy; Nana Yaa Jantuah, Presidential Staffer and PURC board member; and the Chief Director at the Presidency.
Hon. Julius Debrah described Professor Akabzaa as a true statesman who made significant contributions to Ghana’s development, particularly in the energy and mining sectors. He assured the family of the state’s full support in honoring the late professor.
Hon. John Jinapor offered an emotional tribute, describing Professor Akabzaa as a father figure rather than merely a mentor. He recounted how the professor continued to provide guidance to his ministry even during his final days in the hospital.
The family announced that a pre-burial wake and mass will be held on Wednesday, December 10, and Thursday, December 11, 2025, in Accra. Following this, the body will be taken to his hometown, Dua, in the Bongo District for final funeral rites and interment.
The family expressed their gratitude to the President and the Presidency for their support and commitment to honoring the memory of this outstanding public servant and patriot.
