The inclusion of persons with disabilities in the Inter-Sectorial Committee will help ensure that projects are accessible. Mr. Akuribire Mark Atiah Ismail, president of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations (GFD) in the Upper East Region, is a member of the committee established by RISE-Ghana. This committee aims to track promises made by Members of Parliament (MPs) in the three target constituencies: Bongo, Nabdam, and Bolgatanga Central. The goal is to ensure that projects delivered by these MPs are disability-friendly and accessible for all.

Speaking exclusively to the media after the committee’s inauguration, Mr. Akuribire emphasized that many projects in the Upper East Region are not designed to be accessible for persons with disabilities, particularly wheelchair users. He noted that their organization is often not directly involved in the implementation of these projects, leading to significant barriers.

“When I visit a project site, I must check its accessibility. Many infrastructure developments are not accessible to my members, especially those who use wheelchairs. With our inclusion in this committee, we will advocate for projects to be designed with accessibility in mind, benefiting all, including the elderly,” he stated.
This initiative is being spearheaded by RISE-Ghana, with funding from STAR-Ghana and FCDO, to promote inclusive elections and accountable governance. The fifteen-member committee includes persons living with disabilities, women, underrepresented groups, and representatives from political parties.

Mr. Akuribire also lamented societal perceptions of persons with disabilities, noting that people often focus on their disabilities rather than their abilities.
Additionally, he pointed out that the Manifesto Tracker Committee will hold MPs accountable for their promises. He highlighted the need for politicians to engage constructively with their constituents and make realistic commitments.
“This committee serves as a wake-up call for MPs. They must make promises they can realistically fulfill. The developmental gaps between our region and others are significant, often due to unfulfilled promises. With this initiative, we hope to reduce the political tension between parties in the region, encouraging collaboration to achieve our shared goals,” he noted
