The Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has once again assured the people of Ghana that the 2024 general elections will be very peaceful and urged the public to go about their activities without any fear. .
As the 2024 general elections draw closer, many have expressed fear and doubt as to the preparedness of the security to police the election process and to ensure that Ghanaians are able to freely exercise their franchise in a very peaceful atmosphere. Some fear that politicians with the aid of some thugs might use violence to scuttle the process and even injure voters as happened in some parts of Ghana in the 2020 general elections.
But speaking to a group of CSOs under the umbrella name, the Civic Forum Initiative, and some selected media personnel at the Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service in Accra on Tuesday, 19th November, 2024, the Inspector General of Police in his address assured Ghanaians that the Ghana police service has put in place a an election blue print to guide the operations of the Service in the 2024 General elections and future elections.
Dr. Dampare said he and his men are aware of the heightened interest in the 2024 general elections but promised that due to the implementation of a blue print that has been put together for elections and which has been used in the two main by-elections and the campaign processes so far, the 2024 general elections will be very peaceful.
” From where we sit as the national security task force comprising all the security agencies, with the Ghana Police as the lead agency and by extention the Inspector General of Police as the chairman of the task force, we want to assure you, that the election will be very peaceful becauseof the measures put in place. “
The IGP disclosed that the police administration and the task force has used two years to prepare for the upcoming election which has culminated in the design of the first ever election blue print which covers every part of this year’s election and future elections.
” Why are we saying so, it has taken us more than two years preparing for this election because we consider election to be a process and not and event. And this two years has lead us to produce the first ever election blue print for this country covering every part of the election”
The police administration also served notice to all persons who have committed various crimes and are on their wanted list that the police service will get them to face justice not matter how long it takes. All persons who are planning to cause trouble during the elections have also been warned to shelve the idea because the police will deal with anyone who will be seen attempting to forment trouble or formenting trouble during the election process.
