In a significant political shift, members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Nabdam constituency of the Upper East Region of Ghana have defected to the New Patriotic Party (NPP). This change has increased the number of defectors from the initial 31 in the Zogambre community to a total of 39, following the departure of eight party members from Logreyakin Kotintabig.
Mr. Mobil Kolog, the leader of the defectors, expressed that his community has felt neglected by the NDC, despite their consistent support for the party and their Member of Parliament, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, over the past eight years. Kolog highlighted the urgent need for basic amenities, stating that the Logreyakin Kotintabig community lacks a single dugout for livestock, and they rely on just one borehole to meet the water needs of a high population.
He explained that the community often faces water shortages, requiring him to travel to Bolgatanga almost monthly to purchase spare parts for the borehole. Kolog emphasized that he switched allegiance to the NPP in hopes of securing a borehole and dugout for his community, having made numerous requests to Dr. Nawaane with no success.
When asked if he would return to the NDC if the MP provided a borehole, Kolog responded that the MP owes them service for their votes over the years, and that any assistance now would not erase the neglect they have experienced.
Mrs. Tule Mbabil, another defector, likened their decision to changing seeds as a farmer when yields are poor, indicating their desire for better representation and development under the NPP. Similarly, Yin Siih stated that the ongoing water crisis prompted their exit from the NDC, expressing hope that the NPP parliamentary candidate would address their needs.
In response to the defectors, Hon. Charles Taleog Ndanbon, the NPP parliamentary candidate for Nabdam, welcomed them to the party. He assured them that he has been in discussions with the Nabdam District Chief Executive, Hon. Agnes Anamoo, about securing boreholes for the community, with plans to have one constructed before the December elections.
Ndanbon encouraged the new members to remain resilient against intimidation from NDC supporters and to advocate for the positive political changes they seek. He asserted that the NPP has brought more development to the Nabdam constituency than the NDC.
