Nungu Primary School is facing a severe educational crisis, with only two teachers responsible for the entire primary level, while three teachers are assigned to the Junior High School (JHS).
The two primary school teachers have combined classes: one teaches Basic One, Two, and Three, while the other handles Basic Four, Five, and Six. Unfortunately, the kindergarten classes—K1 and K2—are left without any teachers. As a result, while one teacher engages with the upper or lower primary classes, the kindergarten students remain unattended.
The school’s infrastructure is in dire need of repair. The three-unit classroom block, built in the early 1990s by the late Jerry John Rawlings, has not received any major renovations. Broken doors, cracked walls, and leaking roofs contribute to an environment that feels neglected.
Many students at Nungu Primary live in a world devoid of modern learning tools. The lack of electricity means that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is non-existent. Basic Four students often have no clear understanding of their curriculum, which may overlap with that of Basic Five and Six. Similarly, students in the lower primary face significant educational gaps.
The Nuugu community is isolated from the district due to poor access roads. The chief, Naba Bugri Wuni, has been advocating for better road conditions, electricity, and healthcare facilities, but these issues remain unresolved.
Shaibu Wanuhu, a Form Three student at Nungu JHS, shared the struggles faced by many pupils. He mentioned that some students have to lie on bare floors to write and often return home with soaked books due to the leaking roofs. Wanuhu called for government assistance to provide furniture, classroom renovations, uniforms, and improved school feeding programs, as the current meals are often insufficient.
Naba Bugri Wuni expressed frustration over the frequent turnover of teachers in the community. He noted that many teachers either refuse to come or leave shortly after being posted due to the lack of electricity, network access, and proper road infrastructure. Recently, two newly posted teachers also fled, citing unpaid salaries.
“I have visited the district education office multiple times to plead for more teachers,” Naba Bugri Wuni said. “However, those who are sent usually leave because of the lack of basic amenities.”
Attempts to speak with the district director, Mrs. Christiana Ayinzoya was unsuccessful. During a phone conversation with the head teacher, she reportedly warned the teacher not to speak to journalists and to dismiss the students, preventing any discussion about the school’s dire situation.
The ongoing neglect raises serious concerns about the future of education in the Nungu community, where the absence of resources and support continues to hinder students’ learning experiences.
