The Upper East Region of Ghana has reported measles cases in seven districts since the start of the year. Dr. Samuel K. Boakye Boateng, the Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, disclosed that the Bawku West and Garu districts are experiencing outbreaks, while other affected areas include Bongo, Kasena Nankana West, Bolgatanga Municipality, Bolgatanga East, and Tempane.
Dr. Samuel noted, “It’s therefore not surprising that since last year we have been recording an increasing number of children with measles in the country and outbreaks in some areas. In Upper East Region, over 7 districts have recorded positive cases of measles, with two recording outbreaks since the beginning of the year. It is for this reason that we are embarking on this vaccination campaign.”
At a press conference in Bolgatanga regarding the Measles, Rubella, and Vitamin A Integrated Campaign, Dr. Samuel shared that Bawku West has recorded 14 measles cases, while Garu has reported 4. He emphasized the severity of measles, a viral disease that has claimed the lives of 136,000 children worldwide, particularly in Africa, despite elimination efforts. He stressed the importance of early detection, monitoring trends, and prompt reporting to prevent outbreaks.
The 2024 Measles and Rubella campaign aims to address critical gaps in immunization coverage in the country, targeting children aged 9 to 59 months. The campaign seeks to achieve a 95% vaccination coverage and administer Vitamin A supplements to enhance nutritional status, alongside raising community awareness through effective social mobilization.
Dr. Samuel admonished parents and caregivers to make their children available for the Measles and Rubella vaccination and Vitamin A supplementation, stating, “The supplements and the vaccine are very safe for their children.” He concluded with a reminder under the campaign theme: “Measles and Rubella kill; vaccinate your child now for good life.”
