The National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ghana’s largest opposition political party, took to the streets of Bolgatanga to demand a forensic audit of the 2024 voters’ register.
Speaking exclusively to **Word News**, Mr. Donatus Atanga Akamugre, the longest-serving secretary of the NDC in the Upper East Region, alleged that over 334 names have been omitted from the voters’ register through minor checks. He also pointed out instances of double transfers of voters to some polling stations. He believes that an independent forensic audit could reveal more names and irregularities, making the voters’ register more credible.
Mr. Akamugre noted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had previously demanded a review of the voters’ register in 2015/2016 but lacked clear evidence to warrant an independent audit by the Electoral Commission.
He disclosed that the number of protesters was increasing as people from various constituencies joined the demonstration, with expectations of a turnout exceeding 2,000. This, he stated, would send a strong signal to the Electoral Commission about the need for an independent forensic audit.
The planned route for the demonstration began at Jubilee Park, proceeding down National Investment Bank Street, passing the central mosque, continuing to the fire service junction, and then along Stadium Road. The march concluded at the library road, leading to the main dual road on the Navrongo Highway, where they intended to present their petition to the regional Electoral Commission office.
The Ghana Police Service, led by DCOP Mr. Raymond Wejong Ali Adofiem, deployed a significant number of officers to ensure the safety of the protesters. Some officers were even seen on horseback to help guide and protect the demonstrators during the event.
