UE/R: Attempted Bribery of Police officers: Police on Man Hunt for Bribe offerer.

The Upper East Regional police command is on a man hunt for an individual who attempted bribing police officers at Doba check point  to drop a case against a suspect.

On Thursday 25th march, 2021, police officers on duty at the Doba check point in the Kasena Nankana Municipal assembly arrested a suspect  Surogu Mumuni, a Bukinabe in possession of a Buruni Mod. 92 Pistol.

The Suspect, Suregu Mumuni age Twenty Nine (29) was on board a Bukina Faso Accra bound Merceds Benz Articulated Truck with registration number 11HJ2758BF driven by Bennerd Mudah. The truck was stopped at the check point for the usual search.

During vigorous search on the vehicle and it occupants, the  suspect took to his heels leaving behind hi belonging, Police gave him a hot chase and apprehended him in the process. The police brought the suspect back to the search point and a search conducted in his presence revealed one Buruni Mod.92 pistol concealed in a bag he claimed ownership.

Subsequently, the  Suspect made a phone call to an unknown person and after a while, a man in rasta hair did arrive at the scene of crime and propose to offer an amount of Fine Thousand Ghana cedis (GH 5000.00) for the case to be dropped.

Police feign interest and the money was indeed sent to a near by mobile money vender for Police collection. After redrawing the money, Police re-arrested the suspect and brought to the Regional Police Headquarters with the exhibits of Five Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢5000.00) and Buruni Mod.92 Pistol for investigation.

The regional Public Relations Officer, ASP David Fianko Okyere, during a phone interview on the Word Community Watch Show with Simon Agana on Word fm, said the man who proposed to give the money upon sensing danger, didn’t return with  the money to the scene but gave it to the mobile money vender to be given to the suspect for onward delivery to the police officers.

“ he  opted to do cash out from a nearby mobile money vendor stationed around for onward delivery to the police. But I think the discussion the police had with him made him suspicious . He gave the money to the mobile money vendor to be given to the suspect and he himself never returned.”

“We are still pursuing him. He is a subject of investigations and we are doing everything possible to track him”

He said efforts are also on the way to arrest anyone involve

“it wont be too difficult to trace him now because of the transactions he made and some details will be traced from there. We will pick him and the person who was bound to receive the pistol in Ashaima in Accra. There are some middle that  we suspect so we will be able to nib all this people and prosecute whoever is involved.”

Residents in the Region are living in a state of fear with many business not able to operate deep into the night as a result of a spike in arm robbery that sometimes happen during the day hours and in public.

The police have however are assured residents of robust operational strategy including an effective mobile patrols, Snap Cheek intelligence, operations to deal with the crime situation including violent crime to wit armed robbery in the region.

 The police have  called on  residents to cooperate through information sharing leading to the arrested and prosecution of offenders in the region.
