The Upper East Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has supported victims of a rainstorm that wreaked havoc in Binduri District in the Upper East Region.The rainstorm destroyed over 150 houses, leaving more than 500 people without a place to sleep.
It also damaged several electricity poles, leaving many communities without electricity.Speaking exclusively to the media on Friday, 1 May 2026, Mrs. Rebecca Assibi Akolgo said the National Director of NADMO, Major (Rtd) Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon (Director-General), focused on strengthening flood preparedness, collaborating with stakeholders for risk reduction, and supporting staff welfare.
She explained that, upon being informed about the situation in Binduri, the NADMO Director-General mobilized relief items to assist victims within the shortest possible time.Mrs. Akolgo said the items being provided including rice, beans, blankets, tents, cooking oil and others are meant to support the victims through the challenges and losses they have experienced, including the loss of life and destruction of property.
She emphasized that the relief assistance is not the end of NADMO’s support, but rather a “symbol of care, sympathy, solidarity, and commitment” to help the affected communities rebuild stronger.
The NADMO Regional Director reassured the victims that hope is not lost, adding that NADMO and other relevant authorities are committed to supporting each and every affected person to recover and rebuild faster. She stated that NADMO is working together with other stakeholders to ensure timely assistance, saying the victims are not alone.Mrs. Akolgo further extended heartfelt condolences to families who lost their loved one, or suffered injuries and property destruction due to the disaster.
She assured them that peace, unity, comfort, and hope will be restored in Binduri.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Binduri District, Mr. Martin Ariku Akurugu, expressed gratitude to the Government through NADMO, the national directorate, and the Upper East Regional office for the support provided to the people of Binduri District.
He said the relief items including rice, cooking oil, cowpea, blankets, mosquito nets, plastic basins and cups, and tents will go a long way to help the affected communities. He indicated that the NADMO team visited households and documented the level of destruction.
Mr. Akurugu also commended the Volta River Authority (VRA) for its timely response to the disaster, which resulted in the destruction of about 70 electricity poles.He said the Binduri Assembly is working with VRA to procure additional high-tension poles, as efforts continue to reconnect affected communities to the national grid.
He appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring them that measures are underway to restore electricity to their communities.
