Mr Mark Kurt Nawaane MP Nabdam constituency

The Member of Parliament for the Nabdam Constituency in the Upper East Region of Ghana, Mr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, has organized training for 55 women on how to produce groundnut paste, groundnut oil, soap, and dawadawa powder.

These women have excelled in learning to make these products, which aligns with the government’s goal of women empowerment, helping them to become independent and economically empowered, thereby improving their lives and contributing to the growth of their families.

Mr. Nawaane shared with the media that this initiative was part of his promise during the 2024 general elections campaign. He stated that after his party wins the election, he intends to use a portion of his common fund to achieve this significant goal.

Products produced by the women

He emphasized his commitment to transforming these women into entrepreneurs. To support this, he plans to donate Gh₵20,000 as seed capital for them to form groups, produce their goods, and explore marketing opportunities.

Mr. Nawaane expressed his hope that from the trained women, one, two, or even three will emerge to train others. He believes this approach is essential, as government employment cannot accommodate everyone. Learning a trade is a direct way to combat poverty in the community.

Madam Gladys Nam-signa,  a service provider

In an exclusive interview with Madam Gladys Nam-signa, the trainer and service provider in the Nabdam district, she explained how she trained the women in processing groundnut paste, groundnut oil, dawadawa, and dawadawa tea, which is beneficial for diabetes, high blood pressure, and asthma.

She noted that the training was not difficult, as many participants had never seen the processes before.Madam Nam-signa pointed out that even some school graduates are at home doing nothing, but this training could significantly benefit them.

She believes that within one to two years, these women could start their own businesses and eventually employ others.

As a service provider, Madam Nam-signa has 11 workers in her mini factory, where she processes these products. She has been able to employ fully women, including widows and young women, for the past eight to nine years.

She expressed confidence that the trainees will also rise to create job opportunities for more youth in the community. Madam Nam-signa encouraged the women to take their training seriously, emphasizing that seeking work far from home is not always the solution.

Many women travel to cities like Accra and Kumasi, leaving their children behind in search of better opportunities, which is not sustainable.

She highlighted that men today prefer partners who can also contribute, as not everyone can sit in an office. Therefore, having the chance to be trained and to establish their own businesses will be beneficial for these women.

She encouraged those who have not participated to strive to join the training.
