A military and police joint force deployed by the Upper East Regional minister, StephenYakubu on Friday, 15th March, 2024 to seal some mining pits in the Upper East Region town of Gbani were said to met vigorous resistance from the miners.
Captured on several videos, the task force were seen opening fire on the miners. The gunshots led to the death of two young men and injury others.
One of the deceased who has been identified as Bright Mbadiatong was shot by the military and police on his testicles at a close range.
Another young man who also suffered same gun shots died as a result .
The incident equally left several miners injured.
When Word News visited the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, doctors were busily attending to the injured. Most of whom were on critical conditions
Speaking exclusively to Word News, Dr. Ayamba Dennis, indicated that the first person had a shot on his arm to his chest which showed that pellets were still inside his body, while the second person had a short on his knee.
“The first person had a gun shot to his chest and the pellets are still inside, so we need to take him to the theatre. The ex-ray also showed that he has pneumothorax tension as well, which we need to decompress with a test tube, so that is his state now. And the second person is Currently in the theatre. He also had a gun shot to the knee and there was bleeding profusely which was reinforced so we are currently trying to work on the leg and bring him out of theatre. The deceased person who had a shot to the Pneumoral arteries, he came, we struggled, but we couldn’t save him, so his body has been deposited at the morgue”.
Though the mineral commission and the ministry of lands and natural resources deblocked the area for large mining for Shaanxi, now Earl international and compensated some of the local miners who had mining concessions and licenses, some of the local registered mining company declined the offer design by Shaanxi to pay them off and takeover their concession for large scale operations. Earl International has no clear ownership of the entire mining area that has been deblock for large scale until the court decides otherwise.
Yennyeya mining company refused the offer, Nalamtaaba as well as Alafia mining company. So the notion that all the local miners has been paid off is not accurate.
Moreover there is an interlocutory injunction by one of the mining company called, Nanlaamtaba Enterprise in 2023, which was among the pits to be closed by Shaanxi now Earl international last week Friday.
The court made the declaration after the concessionaire, Zongdan Boyak Kolog, also known as Polo filed an application for an interlocutory injunction against the defendants through his lawyers and the presiding judge, Alexander Graham, granted it in 2023.
The interlocutory injunction is binning in the law court and what happened last week which was sanctioned by the Stephen Yakubu as the chairman of REGSEC could be cited for contempt.
