Bawku:  Constitute Committee of Eminent Chiefs for Lasting Peace in Bawku – Mamprugu Youth

The Mamprugu Youth Association in the Bawku Municipality of the Upper East Region has called on government to immediately form a committee of eminent Chiefs to work towards lasting peace in Bawku, following the several decades of chieftaincy conflict.

According to the Association, there was no Supreme Court ruling on the chieftaincy dispute between the Kasaasis and Mamprusis, and reiterated the need for government to institute a committee of eminent chiefs just as it did to ensure peace in Dagbon.

Mr Abdul- Ganiyu Bugri, a Leading Member of the Mamprugu Youth Association, who addressed the media in Bawku, said government should discard its position on a “non-existent” Supreme Court ruling on the chieftaincy issue.

He urged government to rather “Focus on solving the issue with pragmatic solution that reflect the historical foundations of Bawku by setting up a committee of chiefs akin to that of Dagbon to solve the chieftaincy dispute.”

He further called on the Ministry of Interior to extend the curfew hours, ban on the motorbike riding, and the wearing of smock in the Bawku Municipality to the Pusiga, Garu and Binduri Districts, saying that residents in the said Districts had waded into the conflict.

Mr Majeed Mbagura, the Secretary of the Association, expressed concern that officials from the Ministries, especially the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and the Ministry of Interior did not visit Bawku to assess the situation since the conflict erupted.

Mr Majeed Mbagura Secretary to the Mamprugu Youth Association.

“The Mamprugu Youth and our Regent can boldly state that since the conflict started, no Minister, be it the Interior, Defence or National Security Minister visited Bawku to assess the situation.”

“Nothing like that has happened and we are really disappointed in them. We expected them to be here themselves to assess the situation, hear the concerns of the people and see how they could map-out pragmatic security measures to solve the issue,” Mr Mbagura said.
