Basic schools in the Bawku municipalities in the Upper East Region has experienced low enrolment as pupils and teachers run for their lives, even as the academic term is about ending with most schools are writing their exams across the country, but, schools within the Bawku Municipality might not enjoy this privilege following the renewed conflict in Bawku between the Kusasis and Mamprusis.
Speaking exclusively to the Bawku Municipal Director of Education Mr George Ayeriga Azeriya he lamented the low number of pupils and teachers in the municipality following the insecurity in the area.
“ I told you the numbers of both teachers and pupils have gone down, but I just saw that government has revised the curfew hours from 6 pm to 6 am we hope that things get better, we are supposed to write the end of term exams and the insecurity you would expect that the numbers will not be as good as the would have been so the consequences of the conflict are quite devastating not just in the field of education but almost all other sectors “.
Mr George however, appealed to the conflicting parties to embrace peace because where there is no peace there is no progress.
Moreover, the health sector has also been affected negatively, Municipal Health Directorate has taken measures to ensure that personnel are protected.
Speaking exclusively to Mr Ibrahim Saheed the municipal health director for Bawku he said:“ they are realigning health workers to facility closer to them, let us say if somebody is within the hospital area and was working outside the town and the fellow can’t no longer work in that area, we make sure they are realigned to the hospital, it has not affected work because of staff availability but because of the curfew most staff can’t stay longer as expected, because if they are for the afternoon shift and they are supposed to close at 8 pm and the curfew is 6 pm they will have to leave early before the time, I am also in touch with my sub municipal leaders in the facilities to ensure that all new staff who don’t have identity cards get an identity card and we are also been working with the Assembly and the security agencies to provide our staff with some level of protection and security threats” – Mr Ibrahim Saheed noted.
