The Chief Executive of Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, MCE Roland Atanga Ayoo, has hinted that plans are far advanced to address the growing concerns about rampant waste disposal in the municipality.

Speaking exclusively to the Word Community Watch program in the Upper East Region, Mr. Ayoo said he is determined to tackle the waste situation in Bolgatanga, the regional capital, which hosts the largest market in the region where all 15 MMDCs residents gather every market day.

Mr. Ayoo noted that the municipality will be divided into six zones, each managed by a contractor. He explained that residents within each zone will dispose their waste at designated points within their area. In addition, markets will also be required to drop their waste into the appropriate dustbins or disposal points within the zone.

According to him, the waste will be collected from those designated points by residents/zone managers and then transferred for proper management.

Contractors will collect waste from households at an agreed fee, and zone managers will also pay a percentage to the Assembly.

Mr. Ayoo added that the Assembly will support the zone managers with logistics, as the project is being implemented in collaboration with Sustainable Cities.

. He said Sustainable Cities will provide materials and equipment to support the Assembly and the contractors to carry out the work effectively. He further stated that the Assembly will monitor the system to ensure proper implementation and accountability, adding that the zones must be kept in “safe hands” through reliable contractors.

The role of the Assembly, he said, is to supervise, monitor, and ensure that the process is properly followed.

Mr. Ayoo explained that the contractors responsible for each zone will run the project using revenue collected through waste collection fees from households and communities. He also emphasized that the Assembly will regularly visit to monitor the activities of the zone contractors and management.

Mr Roland Ayoo said households will be required to gather their refuse and leave it at designated points such as household collection points where the contractor will come to pick it up at a fee.
