Bolgatanga East: Clearing of 24-hour Economy Market project site done, construction to start soon― DCE

The Bolgatanga East District Chief Executive (DCE) in the Upper East Region of Ghana has disclosed that the site for the 24-hour Economy Market project has been cleared and that construction will begin soon.

Mr Jacob Aka-eri Abugre DCE Bolgatanga East District.

Speaking to Word Community Watch on Monday, 8th June 2026, the DCE said the district is currently clearing the project site to allow consultants to assess how the stores, shelves, and offices will be properly arranged to ensure smooth implementation.

He noted that the work has been progressing well, except for a minor challenge: during the clearing process, a tree that had fallen on one of the DRIP equipment caused damage, which temporarily delayed the clearing. He said as soon as the equipment is fixed, the team will continue the remaining work.

The DCE, Mr. Jacob Aka-eri, added that landowners and market women have understood the project after negotiations. However, he said there are a few individuals who presented special concerns, including Mr. Alolga James , and those whose houses apartment are part of the area earmarked for redevelopment.

According to him, the assembly has agreed to assist Mr. Alolga James and some of the affected people by providing support to rent space for them to stay temporarily, while steps are also being taken to identify a suitable alternative place for them in the future.

He said the assembly is currently looking for appropriate accommodation for the affected person.Mr. Jacob further stated that the cleared space is sufficient for the 24-hour Economy Market project based on interactions with the consultants and the project drawings.

He explained that the market may not even occupy the entire cleared area, leaving a portion of land that the district assembly can use later to build future stores. These additional stores, he said, would be rented to generate enough internally generated funds for the assembly. He also indicated that the 24-hour Economy Market project does not include a compensation component for infrastructure that may be demolished to pave the way for the construction.

However, he said the district assembly has plans to provide temporary structures for those affected during the construction period, and that they will be allocated space once the market is fully completed.

Mr. Jacob said the Bolgatanga East District Assembly, together with the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga East, Lawyer Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, is leading efforts to mobilize resources to resettle those affected elsewhere so that the project can continue without interruption.
