The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kassena Nankana West in the Upper East Region of Ghana has urged the community to adopt behavioral changes to help position the district assembly as the cleanest in the region.

Speaking during the government sanitation day at the Chiana Zone, held at the Chiana market square, Mr. Stephen Aeke Akurugu emphasized the importance of cleanliness by participating in a cleanup of the Chiana market and surrounding streets. He stressed that for this initiative to be effective, the community must cultivate a culture of proper waste management, including generating and storing waste in designated bins for easier disposal. “We will all benefit from what a clean environment will give to us,” he stated.

Mr. Aeke Akurugu highlighted the need for designated waste collection points to facilitate the work of waste carriers, ensuring that the environment remains clean. The assembly is currently in the process of gazetting new bylaws, which will include regular inspections of markets to ensure compliance.

“Every market and business establishment is expected to have a dustbin,” he explained. “When you generate waste, you should place it in the dustbin. This applies to all market women, business owners, barbershops, hair salons, dressmakers, and anyone operating in public spaces.”

He noted that the Kassena Nankana West District is working on finalizing the bylaws, which will impose fines on those who violate sanitation regulations. “We are in the process of gazetting our bylaws, and when that is done, we will go on every market and inspect the stores,” Mr. Aeke added.
