The Member of Parliament for the Talensi constituency in the Upper East Region of Ghana, Mr. Daniel Dung Mahama, has organized mock exams for over 1,552 students, comprising 834 females and 824 males, who are preparing for the 2025 BECE exams.

Speaking exclusively to the media after touring all junior high schools to monitor the mock exams, Mr. Mahama emphasized that the purpose of these exams is to enhance student performance. He aims for significant improvement to help students gain admission into senior high schools, which aligns with the government’s agenda to provide free senior high education. This initiative also opens up opportunities for students to attend teacher training colleges, nursing training colleges, and universities.

Mr. Mahama noted that the mock exams serve as a springboard for students to excel. He highlighted the need for renovations in many schools, addressing issues like inadequate furniture and teacher accommodations. Additionally, he pointed out that some classrooms are empty due to ongoing mining activities in the district.
Mrs. Christiana Azure, a local educator, expressed gratitude to Mr. Mahama for organizing the mock exams. She lamented how mining in the Talensi District has adversely affected education, with many children abandoning school for mining work.
She shared her experiences engaging with children of school-going age who are not in school. When she encourages them to return, they often respond by comparing the immediate rewards of mining to the long-term benefits of education.
Mrs. Azure explained, “While they may earn money now, the gold we extract is finite. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. In contrast, knowledge is something you carry with you for life. It continues to grow and can not be taken away.”
